Android Widens Mobile OS Lead [CHART]
Results from the “Simple Target & Audience Trends (STAT)” report indicate that Android’s share of the smartphone market in the Jumptap network jumped to 52.7% in November, representing an 18% increase from 44.7% in October. Rather than eat into Android’s share with its 4S release, iOS lost ground in November, falling to 22.1% share from 24.6% in October, though remaining ahead of Blackberry (20.9%).
iOS remained the leader in CTR among operating systems, up 14% from 0.63% to 0.72%. Android (0.64%) shot up 30% month-over-month to take the second rank, ahead of Symbian (0.56%). Read the rest at Marketing Charts.
Mobile Email Use Increasing [CHART]
The share of all email opens occurring on mobile devices reached 20.24% in the first half of 2011, representing 51% growth from 13.36% in Q4 2010, according to a report released in November 2011 by Knotice.
Data from the “Mobile Email Opens Report First Half 2011″ indicates that iOS and Android were the clear leaders again in Q1 and Q2: iPhones accounted for 12.78% of all email opens in H1, up from 8.74% in Q4 2010, while iPads nearly doubled their share, up from 2% to 3.92% during the same time period.

Android will be installed on 37% of all smartphone handsets in the country by year-end, up 13 percentage points over 2010. Apple will likewise see its OS increase share, but only slightly: from 28% of the market last year to 29% this year. iOS will continue to inch upward in market share through 2013, but by that year Android will hold more than two-fifths of the US smartphone market. Figures from The Nielsen Company show that while marketer interest in Android is on the rise, it still lags behind the market significantly. Among smartphone owners, 39% had a device running Android as of May 2011. Just 27% had a device running iOS, including iPhones and iPads. Read the rest at eMarketer.
Android OS On Top [CHART]
Smartphones and the consumption of mobile data continue to grow in popularity in the U.S. – 37 percent of mobile consumers now have one – and Google’s Android operating system (OS) is proving to be the most popular. According to Nielsen’s April survey of mobile consumers, 36 percent of smartphone consumers now have an Android device, compared to 26 percent for Apple iOS smartphones (iPhones) and 23 percent for RIM Blackberry. Mobile Advertising Focus [CHART]
STRATA, a software company for media buying and selling, polled agencies about their clients’ preferences in Q1 2011. When it comes to mobile advertising, 37% of respondents said they are creating display advertising the most, and 25% noted SMS advertising. This is compared to 63% for display advertising and 15% for SMS advertising in Q4 2010.
Location-based advertising also doubled as a priority, with 7% of respondents saying they are mostly creating location-based advertising for clients, up from 3% in Q4 2010. Read the rest at eMarketer.
Android Dominates Smart Phone Impressions [CHART]
Fifty-four percent of smartphone impressions on the Millennial Media mobile network during Q1 2011 occurred on devices running the Android OS, according to [sign-in page] the Q1 2011 Millennial Media SMART Report. This was slightly more than twice the impression share captured by Android’s closest rival, iOS (26%).
The only other smartphone OS with a sizable impression share in Q1 2011 was RIM (Blackberry), which garnered 17% of impressions. In addition, smartphones captured 62% of all mobile impressions on the Millennial network during the quarter, followed by feature phones (23%) and connected devices (15%). Android has taken the lead on Apple iOS as the most desired OS for consumers planning on getting a new smartphone in the next year, according to Q1 2011 data from The Nielsen Company.
