Social Login Market [CHART]
Facebook (45%) was the #1 option in Q1 2012 for social logins among online users who opted to use a social network identity to speed up registration on sites across the web, according to May 2012 analysis from Janrain. Data from the analysis indicates that 31% of users turned to their Google accounts for login, with both Facebook and Google growing their share by 1% point from Q4 2011. Twitter also increased its share by 1% point, to 9%, equaling Yahoo, which dropped a point. WindowsLive (3%) appealed to a far smaller subset, as did other login choices, also used by 3%. To date, Facebook hasn’t made search a priority, and it shows. The prominent white box at the top of each page is good at helping users find other members. It’ll also spit back Facebook pages for brands and locations, recent status updates from friends, and general Web search results powered by Microsoft’s (MSFT) Bing search engine. It’s a crude tool, however. Type in “Sonoma winery,” for example, and you get a disorganized assortment of wineries, people who work at wineries, unrelated banner ads, and a page for a wine-tasting iPhone app. In February, Facebook fielded 336 million search queries, according to ComScore—magnitudes fewer than Google (GOOG) and its closest competitors. Among the top four search sites, Google’s revenues will grow most quickly in 2012, although growth rates at Microsoft (from a significantly smaller base) will surpass Google’s in 2013 and 2014. And among social network users worldwide, nearly half chose Facebook in a Janrain poll about which social ID they prefer when signing on to retailer sites. That’s higher than the average for signing in to all types of sites across the web, for which 42% of respondents preferred Facebook. Sport Sites Traffic Surges Post-Lockout [CHART]
One in four web users in the US visited sites in the sports category during the week of July 31, according to data from The Nielsen Company. Compared to weeks during the off-season, the flurry of activity to NFL’s network of sites during the first full week after the NFL lockout ended more than doubled their audience. About 42.5 million Americans stopped by, for a 258% increase in unique US visitors.
Yahoo Sports attracted the highest number of visitors, with 14.9 million unique US visitors during the week ending July 31, which is about 8.9% of active web users. Read the rest at Marketing Charts.
